Tweaking? Grab a sledgehammer!
As the debate rages on regarding the proposed changes to tax credits, the need for a complete overhaul of the UK tax system could not be clearer. The present system enshrines thousands of pages of text spread over dozens of different statutes, some of which date back to the 19th century.
Fairness will only be achieved when we adopt a simple and equitable system that allows people to understand completely what they are entitled to and what they must pay, instead of a system today where even MPs forget what income they must declare.
